Abstract

To defuse the classic conflict between the objectives of driving safety and ride comfort, BMW Group vehicles have long been fitted with semi-active, adjustable shock absorber systems. For the second generation of the BMW X5, the mechatronic design led to a new, innovative, adjustable shock absorber system, which entered series production for the first time at the end of 2006. The relevant sensor and observer concept, whose development forms the focus of this article, was designed in cooperation between the faculty of vehicle technology at Munich Technical University and the BMW Group.
