Abstract
Attention here is not confined to a programming support environment, but rather focusses on the broader notion of a project support environment. It is argued that the role of such an environment is to provide effective support for an effective process, and that this role has significant implications for the design of such environments. It is further suggested that, since few aspects of a project environment are language specific, there is little justification in producing such an environment dedicated solely to Ada. The alternative approach is to provide good support for Ada program development within a language-independent project support environment. An example is presented of one environment, ISTAR, that has adopted a language-independent approach.
