Abstract

The acute anti-anginal efficacy of 2 mg of the β-adrenoceptor blocking drug bopindolol was compared with placebo in a double-blind crossover study in 12 patients with stable, exercise-induced angina pectoris. Exercise tests were performed on a bicycle ergometer 3 h after oral administration of the test drugs. All patients showed an ischaemia-induced ST-depression in the electrocardiogram during and shortly after exercise. Bopindolol significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure and the heart rate during exercise. Exercise-induced ischaemia was effectively reduced, as shown by a significant reduction of the rate-pressure product and of the ST-segment depression.
