Abstract

A comparative study of the lifespan experienced with various models of fixed-rate, R-wave triggered, R-wave blocked, and P-wave triggered pacemakers was made. All pacemakers were made by the same manufacturer during the period 1965-1972. The fixed-rate and R-wave blocked models lasted about six months longer than the triggered series. There is sufficient variability in the lifespan to indicate pacemaker removal only on impending exhaustion as shown by slowing of the intrinsic rate of the pacemaker. Use of a weekly telephonic pacemaker checking service prolongs pacemaker performance averages by four months and is recommended.
