Abstract

Abstract The Italian Glaciological Committee contributed to the activities of the I.G.Y. with two enterprises: the preparation of the Register of Italian glaciers and stereophotogrammetrical surveys of some of the most important glaciers. Prof. GIUSEPPE NANGERONI refers to the preparation of the Register of Italian glaciers; this publication is composed of four volumes: the first volume contains a complete list of Italian glaciers with a wealthy bibliography; the second volume comprises the list and brief descriptions of the glaciers in the Pidmontese Alps; the third volume includes the glaciers fo the Lombard Alps and the fourth the glaciers of the Alps in Trentino, Veneto and Venezia Giulia. The following professors collaborated in the preparation of this complete list: M. VANNI, G. NANGERONI, G. MORANDINI, A. RICCOBONI, D. TONINI. Prof. MANFREDO VANNI speaks about the stereophotographical surveys. He will discuss how the various surveys were carried out; with the stereophotogrammetrical method for the planimetrical survey and with the sismic prospecting method for the measurement of depth. Between 1952 and 1960 the following glaciers were surveyed: Pré de Bar, Triolet, Miage, Brenva (Mont Blanc); Xaltournanche, Tyndall (Matterhorn group); Lys. Grande Verra, Piccolo Verra, Belvedere (Mount Rosa); Tribolazione, Gran Croux, Money, Coupé di Money (Gran Paradiso Group); Forni (Ortles Group); Calderone (Gran Sasso Group in the Appennines).
