Abstract

The activities of aldolase, lactate dehydrogenase and deoxyribonuclease and the deoxyribonucleate and nitrogen contents were measured in the mucosa and carcinomata of 27 colons excised because of carcinoma and in the mucosa and polyps of 8 colons excised because of multiple polyposis. The activities of the three enzymes in the polyps lie between those of the mucosa and the carcinomata. The activity of aldolase is lowest in the carcinomata and the activities of lactate dehydrogenase and deoxyribonuclease are lowest in the mucosa. No difference was observed between the activities of the enzymes as assayed in the isolated epithelial cells and in the appropriate whole tissue.
