Abstract

A model of active ionic transport is presented that accounts for the oppositely directed countergradient flux of sodium and potassium ions through biological membranes. The model assumes the existence of a carrier molecule, but a carrier molecule showing no specificity between sodium and potassium ions. The selectivity of the membrane as predicted by the model is due to the relative sizes of the passive diffusion coefficients.
