AbstractAluminium and aluminium alloys react initially with boiling water with the evolution of hydrogen, but the action is quickly arrested through the formation of a highly resistant film of alumina monohydrate. Impurities and alloying elements in the metal and emery treatment of the surface have some influence on the reaction, but the most important factor in preventing the corrosion from continuing indefinitely appears to be the presence of a certain minimum quantity of silicon in the metal.
