Abstract

Sound speed in, and sound absorption by, water-saturated stainless-steel Feltmetal were measured for eight samples of the material varying in fiber size and porosity. Measured sound absorption is in qualitative agreement with Urick's theory of sound absorption by suspensions. For those Feltmetal samples with impedance similar to that of wood, the absorption values are comparable to those previously measured for water-saturated wood. Change in absorption with increasing pressure up to 34.5 MPa (5000 lb/in.2) was negligible.
