Abstract

A method has been developed for producing a sharp crack and evaluating the fracture toughness characteristics of ceramic materials from the acoustic emission parameters. The method involves the use of a computer-aided measuring and control system and the appropriate FAE 1.0 software. With this method, it is possible to determine the important characteristics of the fracture toughness of ceramics, such as the R-curve for a fixed crack growth rate and V − K 1-diagram in a wide range of subcritical crack growth rates.
