Abstract

The acoustic characteristics of a duct system were studied. The system consisted of a curved bend joined to two straight sections of rigid duct. Solutions of the relevant two-dimensional equations were obtained by numerical methods for a range of bend geometries. The results agreed closely with experimentally obtained data. The effects on the acoustic characteristics of locating a circular arc turning vane in the bend were investigated numerically and experimentally for values of the wave number below that corresponding to the first cut-on mode. Particular attention was paid to the amplitude of the evanescent modes generated at the junction of the bend and the straight sections of duct.
