Abstract

At pH values higher than 0.5, 2- O-(4- O-methyl-α- D-glucopyranosyluronic acid)- D-xylose ( 1) is hydrolyzed faster than predicted. Above a pH of 3, pseudocellobiouronic acid ( 2) is hydrolysed at rates that increase with increase in pH. The hydrolysis of the aldobiouronic acid 1 is probably influenced by both the un-ionized and ionized carboxyl groups. The hydrolysis of the pseudoaldobiouronic acid ( 2) possibly involves intramolecular catalysis through the carboxyl group.
