Abstract

The Academy Colloquium ‘Fungal Phylogenomics’, being a prelude to the centenary celebrations of the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS), was held at the seat and under the auspices of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the CBS Centenary Committee. The opening words by Prof. Wendelaar Bonga on behalf of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences included some remarks on the history of the Academy and its seat, the beautiful “Trippenhuis”. Prof. Bonga also stressed the value of the CBS and its international contacts to the Academy and the Dutch government. The scientific lectures that followed on the next two days spanned various aspects of bioinformatic modelling. Ignazio Carbone outlined coalescent-based population genetics and Michael Weiss the Bayesian inference in comparison to other methods of phylogenetic inference. Other presentations were based on more traditional “partial” genome data. Such as that of Rytas Vilgalys , who showed the dominance of fungi in forest soil with and without CO2 enrichment as well as in agriculturally exhausted soil, and their larger than expected diversity based on ribosomal sequences collected by culture independent methods. A series of lectures emphasized the urge to utilise more …
