Abstract

A number of changes were brought in, including the introduction of the Foundation Programme, with the intention of providing greater efficiency and transparency in postgraduate educational training. The route created starts with the Academic Foundation Programme, followed by an Academic Clinical Fellowship, which is equivalent to core medical or surgical training. Instead of higher specialty training student can opt for an Academic Clinical Lectureship, which ultimately leads to roles such as senior lecturer, honorary consultant or professor. The most important reason for choosing an academic programme is an interest in research and academia. In the final year of medical school, when applying for Foundation jobs student can also opt to apply for the Academic Foundation Programme. The Academic Foundation Programme is the academic training pathway offered to new medical school graduates. An advantage of being on the Academic Foundation Programme is that student will be affiliated to a teaching hospital.
