Abstract

The distribution of bacteria, ATP, Metallogenium morphotypes and manganese-oxidizing activities were studied in Lake Washington, Seattle, WA, U.S.A. In accordance with earlier studies, we have found that Metallogenium morphotypes show a stable seasonal distribution in Lake Washington. We have used 54Mn(II) tracer studies coupled with poisoned and no-oxygen controls to demonstrate that biological manganese oxidation was not linked to the numbers of Metallogenium morphotypes. The data suggest that these morphotypes do not contribute significantly to the biological oxidation of manganese in Lake Washington.
