Abstract

Optical systems which are able to introduce single and combined aberrations on the axial position, called Aberration Synthesizers, are designed and produced. This kind of optical systems have a wide feasibility in fields of optical design and image quality evaluation, such as in experimental study on the effect of aberrations on the image quality. Aberrations concerned are restricted to spherical aberration, coma and astigmatism to get independence between aberrations which are to be synthesized. Generation of coma introduces a little amount of astigmatism concurrently. This astigmatism is analyzed by the 3rd order aberration theory for a decentered optical system and the way for compensation of this astigmatism is discussed.
