Abstract

A 6 MV Pelletron accelerator has been installed at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Metallforschung in Stuttgart/Busnau during the last few years. It is used for the production of MeV ion beams and-as a novelty-also of a positron beam for solid state investigations. An upgrading of the accelerator with an electron beam for low temperature (1.8 K) electron irradiations is in progress. After a short introduction and a description of the accelerator facility the paper surveys the experiments which were performed with the ion and positron beams of this accelerator since its installation in Stuttgart. Selected examples are presented for either characteristic or novel applications in more detail
