Abstract

The 4α orthogonality condition model is studied by using the α-α potential to reproduce the α-α system and the phenomenological 3α potential to reproduce binding energies of 3α and 4α systems. Analyzing solved 4α wave functions of the five low-lying 0+ states corresponding to the observed levels of 16O, we discuss the coexistence of the shell structure of the ground state and 12C-α molecule-like structures of excited states. Comparing with results of the 12C + α orthogonality condition model, we give a justification of the 12C + α model.
