Abstract

New experiments on 3d core excitation spectra of the free atoms Tm and Sm are reported, and the data are compared with measurements for the same atoms in other phases. The measurements were performed using synchrotron radiation sources and double-crystal monochromators in Bonn and in Orsay. Comparisons are made with ab initio multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock calculations, and a consistent analysis of the observed structure is obtained, which has important implications for the interpretation of the corresponding spectra in the solid phase.
