Abstract

This year, the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons met in St-Johns, Newfoundland. The meeting was hosted by Dr David Price. It was a very special meeting because the association was celebrating its 40th Anniversary. All the founding members had been invited to return and celebrate this momentous event. Nine founding members were able to attend the celebrations, including Dr Gordon Cameron, Dr Pierre-Paul Collin, Dr Jean G. Desjardins, Dr Jacques C. Ducharme, Dr James Fallis, Dr Alex Gillis, Dr Angus Juckes, Dr Richard Kennedy, and Dr Barry Shandling. Dr Harvey Beardmore, our first president and founding member, sadly passed away this year and was remembered in Dr Wiseman's opening remarks. The program committee, led by Dr Yanchar, has done a superb job again this year. Of note, 3 presentations on congenital diaphragmatic hernia and gastroschisis were derived from the Canadian Pediatric Surgery Network (CAPSNET), a Canadian population-based database for birth defects in Canada that is supported in part by the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (CAPS). A special moment of this meeting were the panel sessions on “Now and Then”, in which a panel of retired pediatric surgeons debated cases against a panel of pediatric surgery fellows in training. In typical Canadian fashion, there were some animated discussions both from the panels and the floor regarding the cases presented.
