Abstract

Abstract Studies were made of the infrared absorption spectra of methyl esters of oleic, elaidic, linoleic, linoelaidic, trans-10, cis-12-octadecadienoic, α-eleostearic, stearolic, stearic, 9,10-dideutero-oleic, and 9,10-dideutero-elaidic acids in the C–H stretching region. It was further confirmed that the prominent absorption bands at 3020 cm−1 occurring in the infrared absorption spectra of methyl esters of unsaturated higher fatty acids are assignable to the =C–H stretching vibrations of a cis-ethylenic double bond. The =C–D stretching vibrations of deuteroethylenic double bonds (–CD=CD–) in methyl 9,10-dideutero-oleate and -elaidate occurred at 2250 and 2225 cm−1 respectively.
