Abstract

This article provides and analyzes original data on the latest and maybe last cantonal elections in France. Despite their local nature, the elections held on 20 and 27 March 2011 were shaped by important national forces. As with the other second-order elections previously held in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the right-wing governmental coalition received a strong message of disapproval that resulted in a large victory for the Left and in the surge of the National Front towards unprecedented heights.
