Abstract

Concerns the conservation of a waterlogged medieval Chinese ship recovered off the Shinan district of the Korean peninsula. It was decided to conserve not only the finds from the ship's hold but also the remains of the ship. Investigations carried out at the German Maritime Museum and the Mokpo Conservation Centre determined that a two-step polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment was unsuitable. The results of experiments showed the waterlogged softwood of the Shinan ship could be stabilized very well using PEG 400 and PEG 4000. This method is inexpensive. The procedure needed to stabilize the softwood is simpler than that needed for oak.
