Abstract
This article looks at changing ways of talking about God, especially in the Christian west over the past century. The danger of idolatry, potentially present in any objective or ‘real’ understanding of God, is countered by poetic and ‘non-real’ ways of speaking. That which we name as God is a pointer, not to something external, but to things essential to the richness of human experience. The changing scholarly portrait of the historical Jesus reflects developments in that experience in an ever-changing world.
