Abstract

One human characteristic is unduly overlooked by philosophers and bureaucrats alike. Yet this trait is always among the top characteristics people seek out in friends and spouses. Humor, and the ability to appreciate it, is too often ignored by thinkers. Humor is very powerful. An especially good joke can reduce even the toughest man to tears. One more than one occasion, a good joke has caused someone to wet their pants. The feelings a good joke can deliver are immediate and genuine. Two of the most popular types of jokes are “dirty jokes” and “offensive humor.” Humor clearly has an ethical element. Nothing is as unfunny as a joke that goes too far. Humor can be whimsical, but it can be serious too. The idea of “serious humor” is what needs to be further understood. Serious humor is very much like poetry – using few words to convey important messages. In 2008, a seven word joke may have even doomed a presidential campaign.
