Abstract

The role played by three medial thalamic structures (nucleus dorsalis medialis (DM), nucleus centrum medianum (CM), and nucleus pretectalis (Pt) upon the defensive active conditioning has been studied in the rat. We compared the level of avoidance responses reacquisition after electrolytic lesions of the different above structures. The Mowrer-Miller two-way shuttle box test was used with a light or a tone as CS. The most important impairment was due to CM lesions without any specific relation to CS. Deficits obtained after Pt lesions were less severe though they were more noticeable with light. At last even extensive DM lesions did not produce any effect on this test.
