Abstract
The Chulabhorn Research Institute, established six months ago in Thailand, has begun an ambitious program to provide scientific and technological support for the country's development. The institute aims to carry out chemical and related research in developing more fully the country's natural resources and agricultural and other local products— especially in transforming Thai natural products for chemical and medical uses. Behind the institute's conception and work is an extraordinary woman. Not only is the institute named after her, but she is its director. She is a Ph.D. chemist, holds numerous honorary doctorate degrees, and also happens to be youngest daughter of the reigning king and queen of Thailand. Princess Chulabhorn, 30 years old, has clearly set an active agenda for her royal life—to pursue the goal of providing Thailand with, to borrow a time-worn phrase from Du Pont, better living through chemistry.
