Abstract
This study firstly reports the thermal pyrolysis behavior of phthalonitrile resin under argon atmosphere. The thermal stability and volatile products analysis were investigated by thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (TG-MS-FTIR). It is found that the main gas species detected were H2O, NH3, HCN, CH4, CO2, CO. In addition, the most probable pyrolysis mechanism was intensively discussed, proposing that the pyrolysis process of PN resin can be divided into two main stages. Firstly, the labile bonds removal from matrix. Secondly, the thermally stable chars in bulk were generated during pyrolysis process.
