Abstract

Plastic deformation plays an important role in enhancing the texture and magnetic anisotropies of Nd–Fe–B magnets made from melt-spun ribbons. The effects of hot deformation on texture in Nd–Fe–B magnets was examined using inverse pole figures and pole figures for magnets with different % die-upsets. It is shown that W50, the average of widths of the 50% intensity contour in pole figure, can be used as a good quantitative index of texture. With increase in % die-upset from 50% to 70%, W50 systematically decreases from 32.3° to 18.4°. The energy product, (BH)max, increased from 17 MGOe for a 0% die-upset magnet to 46 MGOe for a 70% die-upset magnet.
