Abstract

Abstract A strength differential (SD) effect has been observed in many materials and several explanations have been put forward. However, they are not satisfactory in the case of non-martensitic alloys. In this paper, we show how an SD effect may be related to the asymmetry of glide on a family of slip systems. The case of iron is given special attention. Simulations of the polycrystal line response under various hypotheses of single-crystal plastic behaviour are performed to evaluate the influence of an SD effect on the development of the deformation texture and the shape of the yield loci. A discussion of the consequences of such an effect for some deep drawing situations is given.
