Abstract

Summary Textures and muscovite compositions in regional migmatites from the Central Highlands of Scotland are compared with those of the Huntly-Porsoy area, where early retrograde muscovite retains compositions appropriate to the sillimanite-potash feldspar zone. In samples from the upper Findhorn area, textural relics from this zone are found, even though textures are strongly modified by recrystallisation, and sillimanite no longer coexists with potash feldspar. Muscovite composition varies within a leucosome, between compositions appropriate to the sillimanite zone and others adjusted to much lower grade. In samples from mid-Strathspey, mineralogy is low-grade and textural modification profound, despite relatively little deformation. The grade at which these latter samples were migmatised is difficult to deduce from internal evidence.
