Abstract

As the most influential theory in the last 20th century, Systemic Functional Linguistics provided a brand new perspective for analysis of literary works. This theory enables the linguistics and scholars to analyze language concisely and deeply. The Cop and the Anthem, as one of O. Henry’s famous short story, revealed the real side of American society in humorous language. This paper interprets the text of the Cop and the Anthem from the perspective of Functional Stylistic to analyze its language expression characteristics, plot setting and full-text cohesion. It’s expected to provide reference for the functional stylistic analysis of relevant types of short stories.
