Abstract
The chapter outlines the textiles used in firefighter’s protective clothing (FPC). Fibres suitable for FPC have been discussed in two broad categories, inherently flame retardant fibres and conventional fibres with added flame retardancy. The varieties of fabrics and membrane used for different layers of FPC today are then reviewed with respect to their availability in the market from manufacturers worldwide. Finally the desirable protection and comfort properties for FPC are discussed, in particular the thermal comfort in respect to heat, moisture, and air transfer through multilayered FPC.
