Abstract

Recently growing interest in bio-based material from renewable resources, increased requirements for circularity of materials, and environmental awareness as whole led to reconsideration of natural colorants for purposes of textile dyeing. This chapter focuses on the present situation and new developments in the field of natural dyeing in technical scale. Outstanding highlights are discussed, representative examples are given, and a general discussion of the main important factors is included. Based on general principles which govern the dyeing process with natural colorants, general requirements which determine selection of a plant source and definition of a dyeing technique are presented. The situation of natural colorants in textile dyeing then is analyzed with regard to resources consumption, range of colors, and fastness properties. The transfer and scale-up of dyeing processes in technical scale then are discussed with examples of processes, for example, for yarn dyeing, piece dyeing, and continuous dyeing processes.
