Abstract

ABSTRACT As a pediatrician in practice initially at an urban health center and now at a university-based program, I have found that the most common diagnostic and treatment issues requiring my retreat to the reference shelf involve infectious diseases and their manifestations in children. With my practice now largely devoted to caring for children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), this is even more the case.Although there are several outstanding general pediatric textbooks available that cover most infectious disease topics, I found the breadth and depth of information in them insufficient. In contrast, in the 12 years since the first edition of this text appeared, I have found it to be the best single reference on pediatric infectious diseases. This eagerly awaited third edition has met my expectations and continues to be the reference book I use most over the course of the year. With more than 180 contributors
