Abstract

With the publication of the third edition of their textbook in pediatric emergency medicine, editors Gary Fleisher and Stephen Ludwig have created the most comprehensive book to date for health care providers who manage pediatric emergencies. This very excellent textbook was significantly expanded and improved since their last edition in 1988. There are new chapters on prehospital care and pediatric interhospital transport. The latter is a particularly useful addition, as more and more children are being transferred to tertiary care facilities where they can benefit from the specialty services (medical, nursing, rehabilitation, and so forth) those hospitals provide. Many are victims of trauma, which remains the leading cause of death for children over the age of 1 year. Unlike the previous edition, which included trauma in the section on surgical emergencies, this new edition has a separate section on trauma, making it easier to access information and, perhaps more significantly,
