Abstract

In any new edition of a successful textbook the author must make many far-reaching decisions. How much new material should he add? How much may the size of the book increase? How well can he preserve the original spirit (for any successful text must have an indefinite quality which we can only call spirit)? In the present edition Dr. Robbins has made certain successful compromises. The new edition, although it has about 160 fewer pages, has a larger format. The new volume is approximately half a pound heavier than the original, but the paper seems to be of better quality. Perhaps because of this the illustrations frequently seem to have more snap and clarity than in the original printing.
