They have succeeded in their efforts to a great extent. The book is divided into four main sections. It starts with a discussion on the basic mechanisms of normal and abnormal gastrointestinal function. The next section details the current approach to common gastrointestinal problems. This is followed by a section on specific organs and their diseases. The final section deals with the various diagnostic and therapeutic modalities that are relevant to this field. The authors are all well recognized experts in their subjects and the references are quite exhaustive and recent. The main drawback of the text is the rather poor quality of some of the photomicrographs and endoscopy slides. The presence of black and white photomicrographs are difficult for the uninitiated to appreciate and understand properly. I could not decipher some of the endoscopy slides. The section on hepatology is inadequate for a complete textbook of gastrointestinal diseases. This would make this an even larger and heavier book, but more attractive. This book will become essential reading for all GI fellows and practicing gastroenterologists. It will also appeal to internists and other physicians, who deal with patients with gastrointestinal problems, as a desk reference. Certainly no medical library can afford to be without a copy. The authors have alluded to the tremendous and dramatic changes in gastroenterology over the past two decades. To keep the text current will require a yearly update, which can be incorporated with the present layout quite well. This edition will not replace the other classic textbooks of gastroenterology as yet, but seems destined to be the major work in the future. The price is not listed but is elsewhere quoted at $180, which is a reasonable amount at today's inflated prices for everything.
