Abstract

analyzes writing-reading as a nonsymbolic practice and text as a material object. Popular literature is analyzed together with the performance of live shows as reifying a symbolic type of the circus traveler. This symbolic type epitomizes the modern, bourgeois-hegemonized industrial order. The analysis deals then with popular literature in the context of modernity and with the understanding of modernity via writing. Part I sketches the history and the character of the circus traveler, the major outlines of the theory of symbolic type, and the phenomenon of popular writing. Part II concentrates on three popular books, pointing to thematic and structural characteristics. Parts III and IV analyze the reification of the isolated traveler by popular literature and the live show, assessing the significance of writing and reading books within the totality of the audience's experience.
