Abstract

A series of investigations was conducted in order to assess the need for automated text processing among physicians in the FRG. These included a survey of existing text processing systems, qualitative and quantitative analysis of individual practices, statistical analysis of volume of correspondence of all (approximately 3000) physicians in private practice in the region of Nordwürttemberg, and computer simulation of office organization in general and specialized practice. The results show that text processing can result in economic gains and improvement of office organization in approximately 10% of physicians’ practices. One equally important motive for applying text processing is analysis of office structure and function. This means that primitive text processing techniques do not suffice. An outline for the functions of a text processing suitable for physicians’ offices is given.
