Abstract

A hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal system and median eminence which by light and electron microscopy are comparable to those of tetrapods are demonstrated in the polypteriformid fishes Calamoichthys calabaricus and Polypterus Palmas. Neurohemal contacts are found in the neurohypophysis. The interdigitation of the pars intermedia and neurohypophysis and the presence of a. saccus vasculosus are more piscine organizational features of the pituitary gland. The significance of these findings in the palaeoniscid relict group Polypteriformes is discussed.
