Abstract The ammonium permanaganate oxidation of a tricyclic, rigid diene gives the mono- dihydroxylated compound together with the diol- epoxide derivative. The epoxidation involves an intramolecular oxygen- atom transfer process from the anchored manganese (V) diester to the second double bond.
