Abstract

Definitions of adaptive behavior include behavior that is instrumental in meeting the demands of one’s natural and social environments.1 Definitions and assessment strategies must take into account developmental and cultural perspectives. The developmental perspective is essential since there are different expectations regarding what individuals should be able to do independently as they develop. Adaptive behavior definitions also must take into account cultural variables since cultures differ regarding what they expect from individuals in terms of personal and social responsibility.
