Abstract Once tuned in, one is hard-pressed not to see conspicuous manifestations of parent-offspring ‘ conflict’ everywhere. For even a casual POC connoisseur, five minutes in any supermarket is an observational feast: children ogle chocolate bars, chewing gum and brightly wrapped peppermints (thoughtfully displayed by store managers right where shoppers must linger in the checkout line) and pester their parents with farragos of whining pleas. Parents vary greatly in their responsiveness to such ploys, but one is drawn irresistibly to imagine that candy sales must be higher, possibly much higher, as a result of the begging.
