Abstract

A study of errors of theodolite observations involving 12 samples with a total of 9,420 observations indicates that theodolite observations do not come from a normal population and that the arithmetic mean is not the best value of samples of such observaions. In the course of the study a comparison was made of the results obtained by the use of the arithmetic mean with those from the use of Jeffreys’s weighted mean. It was concluded that, although the use of the weighted mean does improve the accuracies to some degree, the improvement is not worth the time-consuming labour involved.
