Abstract

The adult male rat will usually cannibalize newborn rat pups which are placed in his cage; castration of the male will block this behavior and replacement therapy with testosterone will maintain the behavior. On the other hand adult females, which normally do not kill pups, did not kill pups following treatment with testosterone in two prior experiments. In the present experiment females were induced to kill pups using a treatment regimen involving prenatal and postnatal or only postnatal treatment with testosterone propionate. It was concluded that testosterone is capable of activating killing behavior in the female if the appropriate treatment regimen is employed.
