Abstract
Using the Atlanta metropolitan area, Georgia, as the case study, urban theories on spatial urban structure were tested using Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data, from which land use and land cover, NDVI, and surface temperatures were extracted. In combination with demographic and socioeconomic data, remote sensing and GIS revealed urban sprawl by dasymetric estimation of population distribution, uncovered the relationship between greenness and household income, identified employment centers as areas of high surface temperatures, and confirmed the polycentric spatial structure of Atlanta as the urban realm model that indicates the impact of the globalization force.
