Abstract

Hard water is a problem in any boiler, but it was especially troublesome in the new design of the boiler first used in Rocket. Chemists, acting as consultants, were analysing potential water supplies from the dawn of the railway age in 1830, and those early railways which failed to commission water analyses often encountered serious problems. By the late 1840s, the analysis of potential water supplies had become standard practice, and the chemists had proved their worth.
