Abstract
Abstract The paper reports on a test for the meaning of twenty English modals in context. In the process, the paper exemplifies some of the results obtained and discusses advantages and disadvantages of the paraphrasing technique as a method for getting at the meanings of certain modals. It is concluded that modals that are part of idioms are very difficult to paraphrase but that the multiple meaning of some modals can be substantiated by paraphrasing.
