Abstract
This work describes a system for measuring the elastic characteristics of skis. It is composed of a dynamometric bed on which the skis are loaded, a strain-gauge signal-conditioning module and a data-acquisition card. Transduced forces are used to calculate an index describing the trajectory stability over the same range of load conditions. The system allows analysis both of straight and of curved trajectories. The load intensity may be changed in order to simulate the loading-unloading effects of the skier's body weight and centrifugal force. The load position may be changed in order to simulate the forwards and backwards movements of the skier's body. Five types of skis of differing quality were tested. The proposed index correlates to the quality scales that have been established empirically by experts, showing that, among stability, damping and manoeuvrability, stability is the most important factor.
